DESCRIPTION:Let’s get outside the day after Thanksgiving and collect sagebrush seeds to be used in local restoration projects. We’ll learn some of the basics of native seed collection including collecting etiquette and when and how to tell if seeds are ripe.  \nMEETING PLACE:\nParking lot of Amon Creek Elementary (18 Center Parkway\, Richland\, WA)\nFrom there\, we’ll walk 0.2 mi to the collection site. \nThings to note: A majority of the collection site will be along uneven terrain with sections to collect along a paved road. SUMMARY:Bateman Island Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Removal of the Bateman Island causeway is expected to start in December. This is an Army Corps of Engineers project to restore more natural flow of the Yakima River delta in an effort to improve conditions for salmon. With removal of the causeway\, there will no longer be pedestrian access to the island. So ahead of the causeway removal we are partnering with the City of Richland to hold one final cleanup of the island. \nWe will meet in the lower Wye Park parking lot. Additional parking is available in the upper Wye Park lot and the neighboring lot overlooking Bateman Island. Wear shoes and clothes appropriate for the weather. Bring gloves and trash pickers if you have any. \nThis event is not suitable for children under 6 years old.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the Amon Creek Natural Preserve riparian community. Guided walks led by volunteers from the Columbia Basin WA Native Plant Society and Tapteal Greenway will take folks on a short loop through the Amon Preserve to learn about how native plants impact water quality and wildlife in the basin. The walk will take about one hour. We’ll learn about local flora and fauna including the resident beaver population and their impacts on the watershed. Whether you’re a seasoned walker or just looking for a leisurely stroll\, this event is perfect for all ages and fitness levels! \nGuided walks start at 9:30 AM leaving every 10-15 minutes. The last guided walk begins at 11 AM.\nEducational booths from local organizations will be set up in the Amon Creek Elementary parking lot for the duration of the event. \nThis event is hosted by Tapteal Greenway in partnership with the Columbia Basin Chapter of the WA Native Plant Society and Benton Conservation District funded in part by a WA State Dept of Ecology Centennial grant.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a trash cleanup along the section of the Tapteal Trail immediately upstream of the Wanawish Dam.  We will also send a crew to the area we call Omaha Beach further upstream if there is a large enough turnout.  We will meet at the parking area next to the Wanawish Dam (directions below). Tapteal Greenway and Benton County will provide trash bags and removal along with a limited number of trash grabbers. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring gloves for this event. \nThe dam is located along Hwy 240 roughly 7.8 miles from the ByPass Hwy and Stevens Dr intersection. The entrance is located a short distance past Mile Marker 21 on the left and the large Benton City sign on the right. Look for a pair of orange cones marking the entrance.

DESCRIPTION:We return to the Yakima River for our first Tapteal Water Trail paddle of 2023 on Saturday\, June 17! We will kick off with our traditional upper section of Benton City to Horn Rapids Park. This is an 11 mile paddle and takes 2½ to 3 hours to complete. \nDrop off your gear and passengers at the Benton City boat launch between 7:30-8:00 am and drive your vehicle to Horn Rapids Park. We will have Tapteal Greenway volunteer shuttle drivers there starting at 8:00 am to return drivers to Benton City. The last shuttle will leave at 8:30 in order to return drivers to Benton City in time for a 9:00 am launch. \nSuitable for kayaks\, canoes\, and paddleboards. A life preserver (PFD) is required. DESCRIPTION:Tapteal Greenway is sponsoring a hike open to members and the public on January 1\, New Year’s Day\, in WE Johnson Park. We will meet at 10:00 at the Hall Rd trailhead by the archery range in Richland. To get there take Van Giesen toward West Richland and turn left in front of Woods Nursery on Hall Road and drive to the parking lot at the end. \nThe hike will go from the Hall Rd trailhead to the Duportail Bridge and back\, with a couple of loops along the way. The total distance will be almost 4 miles. The hike goes through both forest and shrub steppe and has some nice views along the Yakima River. It is also a good area for birding. This is a great opportunity to start the year off in a healthy way\, work off your excesses from the night before\, and enjoy some cold fresh air. Hope to see you there!

The paddle will begin at the Snively Road boat launch and end at the Hyde Road boat launch (about 7 miles and 2.5 hrs). DESCRIPTION:Our second Tapteal Water Trail paddling event of 2022 will be held on August 20 from Hyde Road to Bateman Island (ten miles).  This is a slow and relaxed part of the river with good wildlife viewing\, especially birds.  Drop off your gear and any passengers at the Hyde Road boat launch (we will have someone there by 7:00am) and drive your vehicle to the Wye Park boat launch parking lot.  Shuttle vehicles will leave Wye Park at 7:30am to return drivers to Hyde Road for the 8:00am launch.  Estimated paddling time is three hours depending on river conditions.  Shuttle support will be provided but there are a limited number of seats so they must be reserved by contacting us at taptealgreenway@gmail.com.  Reservations for shuttle seats will be taken until 8:00pm on Thursday\, August 18.  Tapteal Greenway does not rent or loan kayaks or paddleboards\, but there are a couple of shops in town who do.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Trail Project
DESCRIPTION:Help us celebrate Earth Day by performing some trail maintenance in Chamna Natural Preserve. We will meet at the Mid-Point Trailhead (not the main parking lot) at 10:00 then split into teams to cut back the vegetation growing along multiple sections of the River Trail. We will plan to work for about two hours. Bring work gloves and sturdy footwear.

SUMMARY:Tapteal Greenway Spring Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a spring hike along the Tapteal Trail near Horn Rapids! This is an easy out-and-back hike that goes partly along the Yakima River through some excellent shrub-steppe habitat. We expect to see plenty of early spring flowers such as desert parsley\, prairie rocket\, veiny dock\, and flowering shrubs. We will also visit the Tapteal Greenway Native Plant Gardens along the way. There is something for bird watchers as well as a section of the trail goes along a marshy area with lots of trees and other great bird habitat. This trail has sandy areas so boots are recommended to keep the sand out of your shoes. \nDirections: Take Hwy 240 toward Vantage to Kingsgate\, turn left into Horn Rapids\, then right at the “T” on River Valley Dr. Take River Valley to the end\, turn right on Village Pkwy. The entrance to the trail is next to the mail boxes across from the end of Redhawk Dr.

DESCRIPTION:This is the sixth year that REI will close its stores on Black Friday and encourage its customers to #OptOutside. For the past five years we have participated in the campaign by offering guided hikes along the Tapteal Trail. As part of this year’s campaign REI is encouraging people to #RecreateResponsibly. The recommendations include to explore locally\, keep your group size small and practice leave no trace. We won’t be offering any guided hikes this year but we encourage people to get out on their own and explore some of our local options: Tapteal Trail\, Chamna Natural Preserve\, Amon Natural Preserve and WE Johnson Park. Information about these options is available on our website. One of the leave no trace principle is to pack out your trash. We would like to extend this to pick up and dispose of any trash you encounter during your hike. If you do make it outside on Black Friday we encourage you to share pictures of your outing with us (@taptealgreenway) on Facebook or Instagram. \n
